New superheroine cosplay pics: Jessica as Black Canary

Was up ’til 4 watching Inception (Christ it’s dope!!!!!!!!! If Marion Cotillard really is Nolan’s Catwoman, i’m  very much okkk with this.), but here’s another superheroine cosplay set. This time it’s DC’s Black Canary. We did her Birds of Prey sorority sister Huntress last week, and figured it was about time we attempted Dinah Lance’s superhero alter-ego.

Jessica Black Canary

Black Canary is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant, has an ultrasonic scream power, and played key roles in various superteams including the JLA [i have no idea if she’s still considered a founding member, but she was at one point (Wikipedia says that’s been retconned since 52; thanks Wikipedia!)], JSA, and the aforementioned Birds of Prey. But her comic book career highlight has to be doing Batman on a rainslicked rooftop in Frank Miller’s brilliant, much maligned All-Star Batman and Robin.

See more pics after the jump. Or not. You decide your own level of involvement.

As high as her profile is in the DCU (and outside the comics as well…she’s shown up on the late, semi-great Birds of Prey series, Justice League Unlimited, Brave and the Bold, and is a recurring character/member of the pseudo JLA on Smallville), Black Canary still doesn’t have a figure in Mattel’s DC Universe Classics action figure line. Blue Devil does have a figure, Black Canary and Huntress don’t. Mattel hates women. Matty Misogynist Mattel.

*update* I’m retarded…there actually is a DC Universe Classics Black Canary, rendering the preceding mini-rant kind of pointless. It was mostly tongue-in-cheek, to begin with, though, so i’ll leave it. And fingers crossed for a new, more Ed Benes-y version of Canary at some point soon…

Like Huntress, Black Canary has been rumored to turn up in Eidos’ upcoming video game sequel Batman: Arkham Asylum 2. I know it’s unlikely, but i’m keeping prayer candles going that Dinah, Helena, or the Casandra Cain Batgirl are unlock-able, playable characters.

Dammit, you’re right JM…she was in the Chemo series. I must have a mental block on that as a.) that’s the only Classics figure i’ve had that broke(leg snapped off, right out of the package), and b.) we actually shot a Chemo cosplay set that mysteriously vanished.

I stand corrected. Still, would love it if Mattel or DC Direct did a more updated look Canary figure. The only black jumpsuit figure version i remember seeing had a bad case of (michael) Turner syndrome.

I’m glad you liked Inception. And Jessica looks gorgeous a always. If I might make a little constructive criticism: While many of the poses are great, some seem a bit sloppy and, consequently, in my humble opinion, less attractive. I’m all for blurring the line between art and porn (I am a fan of Gaspar Noe, after all), but I don’t think some of these shots are quite there.

Just my two cents. I still love you guys.

Yeah, nobody was really happy with these, and some other sets. I do very much like some of the stuff we’ve had here, but alot of it is definitely sub-par. I guess i don’t feel too bad about posting the less successful pics as a.) nobody really knows about this site, and b.) it is a free site. What do you want, your money back? But none of that really excuses half-assing it.

There’s a definite learning curve. Some more recent stuff that hasn’t gone up yet represents significant improvement, and i hope to keep building on that.

Jessica is actually launching her own site that features professionally shot video and photo sets, and we’re going try to replicate a little more of that professionalism in our ongoing efforts here.

It’s not a big deal. I think you’re doing great with this site. I’m actually less familiar with all of these characters and cosplay in general. I discovered your site when I was Googling info on the Watchmen movie before it came out. Then I saw that you’re also a fan of Dexter and Pffr, which immediately sealed the deal for me. I like the site not only because we have some similar interests, but also because I learn about new stuff here too.

I was wondering. Did you ever see one of those Pee Wee Herman live shows? Just a week or two ago, I read that Paul Reubens and Judd Apatow are working together to make a new Pee Wee movie.

Oliver is a moron. Have you checked out the new(er?) Black Canary statue?
It’s gorgeous, and since my comic guy promised me 20% off, I think this is my next big purchase.

As for the site, don’t sell yourself short. I found you by random chance one morning when I was looking around Google for some cosplay. (I’m a huge fan of cosplay, but I don’t have the time, money or the creativity to really get into it as a hobby.) At any rate, now I pretty much check out anything you post bi-weekly since you post so regularly. When my site launches, hopefully this Wednesday, I’ve already already a link to Veidt on my link list.

Of course, if I can’t work out this line of code that has me banging my head, it might not launch until next weekend…but that’s neither here nor there.

Jessica has her own website? Oh, my God, that great news. I am a big fan of her photos, so how I can get the link?

Sherry July 20th, 2010 at 10:00 pm

hey Juan – as soon as Jessica’s site goes live, we’ll post it, and link to it all over the place.

Paraprakrti – i did make it out to the Pee Wee show while it was at the Nokia in January. It was spectacular, like going back to your childhood, and finding it even better than you remembered. I’m up for any new Pee Wee movie, even an Apatow one.

Jacen – i’m not a fan of statues (i like stuff you can play with), but yeah that’s absolutely gorgeous, and one i may need to get.

Charles Logan – I really hope they bring you back for the movie. I’d wish you luck on the Emmy, but Trinity has to win.
