Just hit up my two local comic stores, and heard something kind of disturbing. Alfonso Cuaron’s name has been attached to the film version of Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s superior comic book series The Umbrella Academy for a couple months, but is he now adapting it into an animated movie?!
God, i hope not.
I didn’t make it to the Dark Horse presentation, but from what I’ve read, no substantive news was made other than the movie is in development with Universal for a projected 2012 release (same as Nolan’s 3rd Batman movie, supposedly), and Way’s announcement of a third Umbrealla Academy series, The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion. If this was said at SDCC, it wasn’t via anything official from Universal or Dark Horse. I know they’re going 3D cg with The Goon…which is fine, because i don’t care about The Goon.
Cuaron has made some great films, including Children of Men and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (by far the most visually gorgeous of all the Potter movies.) I’d kill to see him realize these characters with actors in costume…if i want to see them as 2d line drawings (or cg versions of 2d drawings), we already have the graphic novels. Stop motion might be interesting, but this could make for such a breathtakingly stylized and beautiful live action film, it might actually give Batman Returns a run for best looking comic book movie.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra may just be a definitive litmus test for optimists and pessimists. All I’m seeing here is Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes doing amazing things they don’t even attempt in the spider-man films, outclassing goons in Iron Man designer imposters. Also taking note of how great Sienna Miller looks. I’m completely ignoring Marlon Wayans, oblivious to Scarlett needing to be saved…solely focusing on the good stuff in this clip, and i can’t fucking wait to see this movie.
