“How much do you know about fear?”

Javier Bardem Skyfall

Saw Skyfall. My expectations were almost The Dark Knight Rises-high, yet they were easily surpassed. Amazing film with staggering visuals (definitely worth seeing in real IMAX), and the best fight choreography in recent memory; Sam Mendes has crafted a masterwork that answers the eternal question, “What would Stanley Kubrick’s James Bond have been like?

2nd best movie of 2012, just barely behind TDKR, but both of them far above everything else i’ve seen this year. Going back tonight, can’t wait, a couple spoiler-heavy observations post-jump.

  • Skyfall picks up almost where The Dark Knight Rises left off. If you squint a bit, it could serve as a 4th film in Nolan’s Batman series, giving a proper resolution to The Joker. Almost wondering if there was coordination between Nolan and Sam Mendes?
  • With all due respect to Albert Finney, even non-fans of the Bond series will know exactly who was supposed to be playing his role. Sucks that he didn’t/couldn’t, but it’s not too much to ask of the audience to just mentally replace his face and voice.
  • Much is made of 007’s advancing decrepitude, despite looking like someone carved a new, even more angular Daniel Craig out of Daniel Craig.
  • In the Chinese casino, think i saw Bond walk by the Asian guy with the silver ponytail from the big poker game in Casino Royale. Don’t know if that qualifies as fan service, but thought it was neat.
  • The whole time on Silva’s island felt so much like¬†Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers, it was erie. ¬†I mean that in the best possible way. If Mendes had worked in an Eva Green flashback here, somehow, or had Vesper’s ghost show up, i’d have suffered a bliss-induced embolism.
  • Ben Whishaw > Matt Smith
  • That last scene between Javier Bardem and Judie Dench may have eclipsed Alfred in the cafe as my favorite moment in any film this year. “With one bullet…” That’s gonna haunt my head for awhile.

the acting, action and visuals were all great. but the plot had some points that just sucked me right out of the movie.

i thought i saw the asian ponytail guy as well. no one else in my group saw him, so i started googling “asian ponytail guy from casino royale in skyfall,” which brought me here. glad i wasn’t the only one.
