New cosplay pics, this time depicting dark super-heroine Mary Marvel, in her post-assumption of Black Adam’s powers costume. This look debuted about 3 years ago, in a Paul Dini written issue of the comic book Countdown, but just recently got its first action figure in Mattel’s Infinite Heroes line.
Predating the arrival of Supergirl by over a decade, Mary Marvel represents one of the first female spin-offs of an established comic book superhero (thanks Wikipedia!) Her profile was also recently raised when it was revealed that the evil Superwoman character in the direct to dvd Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths is actually the Mary Marvel of the Crime Syndicate’s alternate Earth.
More cosplay pics after the jump.
That Mary Marvel can evolve from her Disney Princess-esque milquetoast origins to one of the darker, more fascinating superheroines in the DC Universe is kind of a testament to the belief that there’s hope for any character when you put a bit of talent and vision behind them.
Mary has lost her powers on several occasions, only to have them restored by the likes of Darkseid, Black Adam, Eclipso, and the Atomic Knights. She’s super-strong, super-fast, invulnerable, able to fly, wields powerful magic lightning bolts, and can score Asian-high on standardized tests.
Essentially on the same power level as her brother Captain Marvel / Shazam, she’s almost as omnipotent as Superman, making her strong enough to smack around the likes of Wonder Woman and Supergirl. She also dresses better than the lot of them.
This was the first shot at doing Mary Marvel’s dark, Black Adam-ish costume. Fun to shoot, hope you like it. A second set of pics will go up soon.
Thanks to Jessica for wearing the costume.
